Landmarks
The ‘ Cultivos Marinos Pacificos Austral’ company
was founded in 2001 with the mission of developing new business
within the national aquaculture area, giving the privilege
to the South Zone of Chile due to the natural and sanitary
conditions of its waters and coasts.
In the year 2002 the evaluation of the red and green abalone
(Haliotis rufescens, Haliotis discus hannai) land based abalone
farm project begins, obtaining all the permissions and environmental
assessments required by the Chilean regulations; thus, we
absolutely fulfilled the requirements posed by the Chilean
authorities.
After a complete analysis of the potential locations for
the development of a ground farming abalone project near Valdivia
city, the town of Corral, specifically ‘Los Liles’
sector was chosen.. The choice of this spot was based on elements
such as the quality and purity of waters, the abundance and
availability of seaweed, the absence of nearby industrial
settlements, the availability of access roads and electrical
supply, in addition to the stunning beauty of its surroundings.
The abalone farming project considers an annual production
of 40 tons and it is based on a natural diet of fresh seaweed
from the area in order to obtain a product 100% natural with
a texture and flavor matching the international market’s
demand.
In 2003 the building works of the water adduction system
start, together with the land removal, the set up of the electric
wiring system and the engineering work in order to begin the
settlement of the culture’s ponds of the first project’s
stage which consists of the fattening up of the red abalone.
For the implementation of the project, natural material such
as stone and timber is used in order to reduce the visual
impact, achieving a harmony with the natural environment.
In February of 2004 a trial period begins, with the settlement
of 350,000 units of red abalone (halitosis rufescens) with
an average size of 21 mm. per seed, provided by companies
from the northern area of the country.
Commitment
The company has a commitment to carry out the development
of a sustainable activity with a minimum environmental impact.
To accomplish this aim, we have developed a program along
with the ‘Corporación Ambiental del Sur’
(Southern Environmental Corporation) and Corral’s town
hall for training workshops for collectors and fishermen of
the zone in order to train them on sustainable management
techniques of seaweed resources.. The aim of this program
is to generate a positive social impact in the area, in order
to have a permanent seaweed supply through management plans
that guarantee the prairie sustenance
Additionally the company takes part in the ‘Asociación
de Productores de Abalon’ (APROA) along with the sanitary
certification programs which are being carry out by the same
organization.
